A San Francisco Summer Day

Today was one of those perfect summer days when you sit at an outdoor cafe with a friend in the city and yammer on and on with each other . . .

My dear friend Brady (child therapist extraordinaire + go-go dancer by night!) and I met a few years ago at Balboa. He's the AB 36-32 therapist for many of the same kids I teach. They're classified E.D.--Emotionally Disturbed--doesn't that sound like such a primitive label? In any case, we immediately bonded over wild kid stories (as well as each other's fashion sense). Brady has become one of my favorite people in San Francisco! He's fun, adorable, versatile, dynamic, and so zen. What a package.

Brady and I had lunch at Cafe Flore, a sweet little restaurant right in the middle of the Castro Distict of San Francisco. We sat on the patio, overlooking Market St., and started out with these:

Shortly thereafter, the waiter brought us our avocado salads--pretty much the most ideal lunch for a sunny/breezy summer day:

(I love salads as big as my head)

So delicious. There is literally nothing like California avocados in the summertime.

We sat in the sun for a couple hours and talked about love and dating and friendships and dancing and jobs. This is exactly the kind of afternoon that brings calm & happiness to my soul. I'll tell you what: amid job insecurity and a roommate moving out and dating woes, I am so grateful for my friends (near and far). Where do you go when you need to be restored?

**On a totally unrelated note: What on EARTH did The Bachelorette do tonight?? I can't believe she sent that dear boy home. I wish I could swoop him up and make him feel better. ;)

oh, how i wish i was in san fran right now at some little cafe! i have to admit, even though sf is my favorite place in the world, i've not been to all the districts, but i need to!

your salads look delicious, and as far as i'm concerned, a salad isn't good unless it's HUGE!

i'm so not a romantic or mushy or any of that, but when i really need to talk, cry, rant or just have a hug, i don't know anyone who is there for me like my husband.

Hi Claire! :) I'm glad you found me so I can go through this lovely blog. Nightswimming by R.E.M is indeed one of the most beautiful songs ever! I can say it restores me completely, rather than a place.
Your profile and this post made me curious about your job, guess I'll have to lurk more here... ^_^

I'm very sorry to say that I had to give away the puppies because my house doesn't support them (also, I share the house with 7 other girls and they were freaking out already :( )and that the white one passed away three days ago. I just got the news and I'm devastated. But still, there are videos of them in Youtube. I'm user 4kit0 and the videos are "Erika e filhotes" - it's in Portuguese, I'm Brazilian.
Wow, can't believe I wrote so much! Sorry for bothering you. Do you mind if I link your blog?
Have a lovely day,

kiki

Yay for friends and good food/ambiance restoring us! Those salads look amazing. And I agree, a salad isn't a salad worth eating unless it's the size of your head. ;)

hi claire thank you for the visit and for complementing my illustration! wow meeting a great friend for lunch on a summer day in san francisco sounds like an awesome event - and yeah sometimes that is all you need to recharge your batteries! For me I go to the beach or hike on the woods - there is something so powerful and calming to be with nature

ps: also a huge fan of bachelorette but i am hoping she will end up with roberto!

I wish I had been out on that patio with you and Brady! Sounds like such a fabulous time! I'm so grateful for my friends like Brady who are my go-to people who make you feel like everything is going to be alright when things are a little shaky. I feel that way about a lot of my "blog" friends as well - including you :) I know Micaela cares SOOOO much about you too as well :) When I need to be restored I go to my mom's house. Hanging out with her watching a good movie always makes me feel a ton better!!! Calling Micaela always helps too :) sending you hugs!

i "felt" your perfect summer day -- don't you love when life hands you incredible moments like these?

i go home to TX to be restored-- i kid you not, the moment my plane landed in Dallas, it was as if i could breath easier. Nothing is more calming then home. When twinkie picked me up, i swear it was as if i had never laughed so carefree in ages.

(and i'm laughing cos i realized my twinkie just answered the same thing lol)

ps. i LOVE me some avacado!

Korbel and avocado?! SIGN ME UP. Your friend sounds rad for sure...I'm a therapist and I work with kids too, but I definitely don't have the balls to go-go dance by night! Amazing! Sounds like a keeper...hang on to that one.

Days with good vibes are the best days. I wish many more for you!

awww, I shouldn't be and I shouldn't say, but I am so jealous. I both wish I was Brady sharing a delicious lunch with you in the City, and wish I was you enjoying it all! :) I shouldn't want to be where I'm not, but I'm looking forward to heading back to my digs!

But I have to say Chile avocados in the summer are pretty wonderful too! Grown at the same latitudes, opposite hemispheres.

Hope you have many more uplifting days like this throughout the summer. XOXOX
