What's Your Sign?

I love August, and I like to think that there are reasons other than that it's my birth month. Late summer is so pretty in California--sunny, breezy days, cool nights, pre-Fall restlessness. We get our summers a little late here in the Bay Area, so there are still plenty of weeks of beach time left.

My Nana's best friend Janet is an astrologer, and she ordered birth charts for each of the grandchildren when we were born. Every few years, Janet reads our charts for us, and it always helps me to feel more at ease (i.e. more in control?) to hear what's going on with the planets in my chart. The craziest planet is in my house of love and romance? Ohhhhhh! :) haha.

When I was a kid, everything I read about Leos made me a little uncomfortable; over and over I'd read that they were pushy, prideful, and vain. But over time, as I came to know myself better, I realized that those are exactly my worst traits. Better to be aware of it, right? I also saw that Leos embodied my best traits, too: love, passion, generosity, confidence, creativity, strong will.

From Wikipedia: Leo is considered compatible with same element signs, Sagittarius, Aries, and Leo itself. Leo is considered to be a very affectionate character, and there are often times that the Leo person will appear to physically look like a lion. These signs share a fiery demeanor and are believed to relate with each other on that merit.

Ha! "There are often times that the Leo person will appear to physically look like a lion." Pretty amazing. Astrology books often describe Leos as "tawny-colored" and with a "mane of hair." :)

Astrology dates back to 3000 B.C. I know a lot of people dismiss it as superstitious nonsense, but most of us agree that gravitational pulls can affect tides, hormones, and moods, right? It's not so far-fetched to me that the positioning of celestial bodies renders similar effects. But don't get me wrong: I think horoscopes are mostly ridiculous and totally arbitrary (and written by people who aren't astrologers).

Have you had your chart read? Do any of you put any stock in your astrology?

Because I love it so much, and I identify so deeply with my Leo-ness, I also love pretty representations of astrology:

So . . . what's your sign???

I'm an Aquarius...definitely fit the description to a tee! I'm creative, loyal, organized, fun, etc...and a dreamer. I typically make GREAT friends with Leos but a friend and I have promised ourselves we'd NEVER date a Leo again hahahaha. Leo men are not great at relationships, in our humble opinions :)

I'm a Libra and it fits me to a tee as well. I only know a handful of Leos for some reason but they fit the description you provided perfectly. How cool that you can get your charts read every couple years - I would love to do that sometime.
I've also got a little giveaway going on this week.

I've never had my chart read, but I do believe in the signs and their traits - they ALWAYS seem to fit! I am a Gemini, and I most definitely fit the bill:)

OMG, my mom did my birth chart and my kids! She has all kinds of books, and is always telling me when things are conjuncting, or at opposites, and so on! I think it is so facinating! I know all about houses and planets, north nodes!
God made the stars and plants for signs!I think it is a sience not a religion!s
I am a Leo with the north node (moon)in Scorpio, my life lession is sex and something else, can remember! I think it is so neat how yes my main sign is Leo, but I have other signs in the different houses! So complicating and so fun!

i knew there was a *bigger* reason for why i like you after only reading your blog for a few weeks: i'm an aries! i totally believe in astrology and faiza actually turned me onto phil booth...i don't read it everyday, but when i do, it's uncannily true!

[and you are one of the lucky ones, living in CA where it seems to be beautiful all year round!]

Oh, Claire! You know I created my own chart, early in high school, where the family (early death of a parent part) had already occurred and was very obviously part of my chart. Also several other things that didn't really mean much to a 14 year old, but most definitely ring true now. Plus!

Yes, there's a plus. I had my vedic astrology chart read here about a year ago, and there were some very interesting notes about timing, super specific and to a tee describing my recent history before I left the States. It was eerie!!!

Also, there are so many things that go into our most personal charts that even twins will have charts that differ. Meaning, we are so much more than our sun signs, though the sun sign's sweep is pretty big and easy to identify with. In my personal experience, Geminis and Leos love each other :)

I am a LEO all the way!!! :) And Claire your comments make me smile ear to ear .... I was skeptic of the whole herb ice cream but yes paired with something outrageously good is the key to enjoying them. I have yet to have a good peach cobbler we should get together ... do you know how to make one?? And we can have a couple drinks as well!! Sending you a hug! xo

I really get along with most Leos, not because our signs match up, but because everyone in my family is a leo it seems (but me, I'm a scorp), and I get you guys.

I'm pretty much a full-blown scorp, minus the jealousy, but with an emphasis on obsessive (not with people but with certain aspects of life) and hot-headedness. :)

I think anywhere on the west coast during the summertime is beautiful and perfect, weather-wise.

AQUARIUS IN THE HEEZY!!! what what!!!

so i'm not one to read horoscopes daily or have my chart read BUT i once found a horoscope dedicated to my birthday, february 15th, and everything, i mean EVERYTHING, it read was me to a T! kid you not!

it included words like passionate, stubborn, impatient, ecentric, humorous, selfish and independent. i almost freaked out, i was so excited...and then i accidentally deleted it and i haven't been able to find it since.

whoopsie.

I am an Aquarius, and know very little about it, although a friend of mine who knows her charts well says I am most definitely an Aquarius. I fall on a cusp though - and she has a whole lot to say about that too. One day, I'll make her sit down and really discuss it v. the usual random tidbits I get from her here and there while we have dinner, make art, or hang out! Maybe then it will finally click for me!

I'm not into astrology at all but the signs are quite interesting. I'm supposed to be an Aquarius but I don't read them so I don't know much about it.

P.S. Thanks so much for joining my swap :)

i'm a taurus but some of my favorite people in the world are leos! which makes complete sense that you are too!

happy birthday month!

I'm a Taurus and love my birth month (May) just as much as you like August. I read my horoscope every single day at the end of the day to gauge how correct it is. For the most part they are usually dead on. It's weird like that but I do believe in them.

I'm a Gemini and well mostly I think the duality of that sign affects me a lot subconsciously. Sometimes it does come across as there being two sides of my personality. Want to know the funny thing? Boypren is also a leo. When we first started dating on a total whim I checked out our compatibility and it was a match. apparently we are also a match when it comes to the chinese zodiac! haha

my dad was just talking this afternoon about august in san francisco and how beautiful it is (of course i think any time in sf os beautiful just because i love the city so much)!

my husband is a leo, and i can definitely say that he embodies all of the good and bad (pushy and bossy) characteristics of a leo!

LEOS UNITE!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so with you on this one. I waver between is it true or not but then know it's much more fun to think it is and totally immerse myself in it. I love being a Leo and I love that I can excuse stuff I do because it's a "leo trait" (I'm not awful I swear). The only think that sucks is that my sister and I are 2 years apart but her birthday is august 9th (mine's the 8th), and we are so different so I always get a Leo high and then think... aw man, this all applies to her too!

Capricorn... and now I want to go read up on it!!

Fun post- and with the new blog redo I had I updated my blogroll... and added you to it! Sorry it took me so long to do!!

My sign is interesting, because I fall under two. I was supposed to be born under the sign of Leo, and I carry MANY of the traits. However, I was born three weeks late (!!!) and my birthday falls under the sign of Virgo... I carry MANY of those traits as well. I generally stick with Virgo as 'my sign' but I always find it interesting just how "Leo-like" I can be. :)

I used to love astrology... and I still kinda do but I'm not as into it as I used to be. I'm a Capricorn, and I kinda think I fit the bill but sometimes they sounds a little boring. Plus it's a seagoat... come on! Leo the lion is a much cool mascot (or whatever you would call it)!

I love Leos! Probably because I'm a Sagittarius, haha : ) We are known for being firey, independent and blunt, all of which pretty much describe me to a tee : )

Have a great day, girl!

I'm an Aquarius! I relate to some of it, but I feel like my personality is so much more then just that. I don't know too much about astrology maybe there is a reason I have some very different specific traits opposite of my sign :) Fun topic!

I was born on the cusp so I'm both a Libra and Scorpio though I identify more with the Libra side. It's hard to read both in the magazines though, I pick and choose the one I like better!
