Friday I'm in love with Central America

It is Friday and I am very much in love with three things:

1. These shoes

I first saw them on this blog and my heart skipped a beat . . . I looked them up immediately, and am now mustering all the justifications I can for spending $178 on a pair of shoes right before Christmas (when I should be saving my money for gifts!).  I cannot get these shoes outta my head!  Just imagine them with black tights and a gray ballerina-esque skirt!  They are perfect.  They are exquisite.  I have to find a way . . .

2. My students' reactions to the West Memphis Three case
In class we read Damien Echols's memoir, Almost Home, and then watched the HBO documentary, Paradise Lost, about the West Memphis Three case.  My students are so into it, and it makes me happy, because trust me . . . this case is worth getting to know.  It's crazy to think that blatant injustice is still happening in our "civilized" country.

3. Leaving for Guatemala tonight!
Freeman, his parents, and I are hittin' the road tonight and catching a flight to LA at 9:30, immediately followed by a flight to Guatemala City!  We'll head to Antigua bright & early tomorrow morning, and will stay there for the next few days.  We're all gonna be exhausted (hello, international red-eye with a toddler!), but it will be well worth it.  I've been battling wanderlust for quite some time now, and I think this trip might just take care of it.  For a while, anyway. :)  Check out these pics of Antigua, known for its volcanoes!

I'll be back Wednesday morning, so in the meantime, have a fantastic weekend!

Have any of you been to Antigua, or Guatemala in general?

Oh oh, have the most fantastic time! Those are the bestest dancing shoes (I think the fact you're teaching the kids about the West Memphis Three case, and getting the reactions you're getting, are enough to warrant doing some nice for yourself).

so much fun! Enjoy Guatemala, it is such a beautiful country. Just keep your eyes closed as you drive out of Guatemala city... the driving is a bit of an intense experience for those of us used to organized traffic laws!

Claire SO jealous of your Central American getaway! For all the places I have traveled to, I have never been south of the border. Not even to Mexico!!! Crazy!!! Can't wait to hear all about it! Travel safe and I'll miss you the entire time you are gone!
I wish I was in your class studying the West Memphis Three. Sounds so interesting and SO tragic!!! I have never heard of it (love the things you not only teach your students, but me as well!!) and I think I might just have to pick up the book and documentary! Thanks for educating me!
Enjoy your lovely holiday!!! xoxo

Your trip sounds like so much fun! Jealous!

I read Devil's Knot, a book about the WM3. It is scarily eye-opening. What a great topic to explore with your class! I wish I had had teachers who were willing to get into really interesting and contemporary topics like that when I was in school. Your students are lucky!

I am always inspired by students who connect with the West Memphis case. I am one of the founders of the site wm3.org and understand the anger toward the justice system this case incites. Kudos for introducing the case to your students!

those shoes just made me drool all over my keyboard. so pretty and fantastic! perfect for wearing and getting in the mood for the aforementioned holiday shopping ;)

the wm3 trial is so interesting. most of what i know about it was done during personal research. i wish my teachers had done more to educate me on it!

travel safe! your trip sounds lovely.

Can't wait to see pics of your trip, have fun!!

I hadn't heard of the WM3 case but when i read about it after your post, i was shocked. Besides the obvious - the fact that they were wrongly convicted - i CANNOT get over the fact that they are denied retrial and justice time and time again! And i quote: "The prosecutors, while conceding that no DNA evidence ties the accused to the crime scene, has said that, 'The State stands behind its convictions of Echols and his codefendants.'" ARE YOU SERIOUS?!
I think it's super awesome that you are discussing this with your students!!

The shoes are just lovely. If you can't justify the purchase, maybe you can hint a few people to get you an early Christmas present. ;)

I hope you are having a fantastic trip!

If each of your readers donates $1, those shoes can be yours next week! I'm willing to do so! How about it, everyone? Link us to a paypal! Have a wonderful trip. I know you will. Can't wait to read about it! My dad used to work there, and I have been to Mexico and Costa Rica, but never the Guat. Hear good things though.

Okay first, those shoes...ohmigosh love! Do they not make you want to pirouette simply by looking at them! Forget justifications...you need them. Period!
