It started with a text from my sister (who lives in Georgia) at 7:41 am that said:
"Don't go anywhere near the Bay Bridge this morning--man with explosives!"
By pure fortune, or God's will/cosmic plan, we're off school today for Veteran's Day, so it was the one weekday I didn't have to cross the Bay Bridge in the morning.
Apparently, there was a "mentally unstable" man in an SUV threatening to either jump off the bridge or detonate explosives. The standoff went on for two hours, and the upper deck of the bridge was, of course, closed down (which probably meant that like 50% of San Francisco employees were extremely late to work today).
He didn't have explosives, but he did have a gun (which he threw over the side of the bridge into the bay). Check out this crazy article. Thankfully everyone's okay.

Oh my gosh, that is crazy! Thankfully you're okay & everyone's okay. Although, my goodness, I can't believe the man's teenage daughter was there - that poor girl!
(Btw, I know it's a total aside, but loved your comment about faraway places seeming so familiar. Whenever it happens, it feels kind of crazy, but nice :)).

OHMYGOD! i am so glad you were home today and didn't have to deal with this scene in person! i am scared enough of bridges on a good day! this would have been AWFUL! eeeeee!!!! and i can only imagine the horrific traffic it must have caused!
Oh man that's scary!!! Glad he didn't hurt anyone. His poor daughter, I can't imagine what it must be like for her. It's so scary that at any moment some lunatic could do something crazy like that.

oh man! SOOO glad you are fine, that you had today off work and didn't have to be panicking on the bridge. And that everybody else is OK too.
I was watching this too, and couldn't believe that someone would do this. He obviously needs to seek some mental help. So glad that everyone was okay... what a commute nightmare! Thank goodness you didn't have to sit through it!

Boy oh boy, I don't miss the commute each day over the BB. I hated that sucker and was always afraid I would get stuck on it during an earthquake. I still have nightmares about that.
I hope you have a blast on your trip. I am actually headed to SF for a biz trip on Mon-Tues. Will be good to be back in my old stompping grounds for a while.
