Heroes

Here are just a few of mine.  Don't you like to see them all smiling?

Martin Luther King, Jr.

(have you seen Susan Sarandon portray her in Dead Man Walking?)

Nelson Mandela
"the struggle is my life"

Rosa Parks

Che Guevara
(and not just cause he was hot)

What all of my heroes have in common (those pictured above and those not) is that they all fought ceaselessly for what they believed was right.  I think that we, as humans, have a responsibility to the world--how can we witness injustice and stand by silently?  Not all of us can travel around the globe fighting oppressive governments and healing sick children, but we can all do something.  We can volunteer, we can teach, or we can stand up for what is right when we hear someone make a hateful remark.

Thinking about how I can be more like my heroes today!  Tell me, who are yours?

Great blog! I love that you included Sister Helen Prejean. Have you read the book, Dead Man Walking? I saw the movie, but the book was even better!

Very inspirational. I really don't have any specific heroes. There are a lot of really amazing and strong personalities past and present that have done purely good and great things with their influence. I like gutsy people that will stand up for the many injustices in this world.

You are right! We all have the power to do so much, right where we are at right now, right in our own towns and cities. One of my heroes is Rosa Parks too, and when I awoke today I thought a lot about Martin Luther King, Jr. What courageous people, who changed the world. :)

Your post has reminded me of the quote "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing". I had a quote (from my daughter of course) on my blog last Friday that also reminds me of your heroes - "The true meaning of life is to plant trees under whose shade you do not expect to sit", you do that with your work I think Claire. Generations might change because of you.

I adored seeing all these amazing people with sweet smiles on their faces! Made me incredibly happy. Especially Rosa Parks, her smile is just so beautiful! Martin Luther King Jr. is def on my list. As well as Nelson Mandela, Anne Frank, Mother Teresa and Judy Blume. I know there are tons others, but those come to my mind instantly. You are very easily on my list too Claire. Not only do you teach and educate your students on such important issues they might not otherwise ever learn, but you are so passionate about the injustice in our prison system. That is such an honorable and brave thing! And I love when you talk about it, I can see the fire in you when you do! Thank you for such a beautiful tribute to some amazing leaders!

Great, great post! I'd list all of your heroes and include contemporary ones like Oprah and Bill Gates for using their wealth for really great causes.

You arise beauteous in the horizon of the heavens
Oh living Aten who creates life.
When you shine forth in the Eastern horizon you fill every land with your beauty.
You are so beautiful: you are great; gleaming and high over every land.
Your rays embrace the lands and all you have created;
You are Re and reach out to all your creations, and hold them for your beloved Son.
You are afar, but your rays touch the earth;
Men see you, but know not your ways.

...thanks...sweet sugar!

i'd have to add my parents to that list along with the millions of people in this world who are forced away from their homes, displaced, refugees due to racism and genecide and hate. am so thankful for canada and for pierre trudeau and the aga khan for giving my parents a home here.
