San Francisco's Battle over Foreskin

We've voted on some awesome/strange things during my tenure as a San Franciscan.  Ultimately, I love the idea of voting on individual propositions, because it empowers voters to make direct decisions, rather than just voting for people who may or may not uphold their promises.

This one just may be the wackiest I've seen, however:

Proponents of a "circumcision ban" in San Francisco have gathered over 12,000 signatures in order to have this issue placed on the ballot (they'll find out in a month whether it will appear).  They argue that "To cut any body part off somebody who can't consent to me is just madness. You wouldn't cut off an ear or a finger or a nose."

This ban, if voter-approved, would outlaw circumcision for any male under the age of 18.

Being female and never having had a male child, I haven't given a whole lot of thought to circumcision.  Guess I might have to, soon!  :)

p.s. Take that, Trump.  And I hope you're not serious about running for president.

haha! oh man, san francisco is crazy. do you remember all of our lovely options during the mayor's election? sometimes i appreciate the fact we could vote on everything, but other times i think it's just a waste of everyone's time and energy.

this is one of those "never going to happen, but interesting to dialogue about" issues. there are so many health benefits of circumcision that a lot of parents would want to do this even if it wasn't for religious reasons. and then there are the religious reasons where circumcision is seen by many as a requirement by god. it's not as simple as cutting off an ear or finger, and kids get medical procedures without their consent all the time. the thing is, there are so many different practices that are seen as necessary in one culture, and completely absurd in another culture. in a free country, where do we draw the line to say which culture is in the "right" and which is not?

good talk! :)

This is the craziest thing I just can't believe it. I could go on a little nursey spill and rant on this topic but for reader discretion I will refrain. I still can't believe that guy is in a penis costume...oh my word.

That penis costume is amazing. Just amazing. My mom was a nursery nurse for 20 years and insists that had I been a boy, I would never have been circumcised. She'll get up on her soapbox and talk about how it's not necessary, how it was promoted by Kellogg (of the cereal company) to make masturbation not feel as good and hopefully discourage boys from doing it. Ha! Anyway, I just love that this is prompting people to dress up like penises. Amazing.

Wow--I didn't realize that there was so much feeling and passion behind both sides of this issue. We have never voted on/or really deal with anything circumcision related in my state, but it is interesting to think about!

P.S. In response to my royal wedding post you commented on: I totally agree with you about the cameras and the way the media has blown this whole thing out of porportion. I mean do we really need one more untrue and based on false source television specials about Kate's life before Will and Diana's wedding?! I even saw that on Lifetime they had an actual movie about their romance and I was just like C'mon...how much of this is truly accurate? So, yes I'm interested, but in the wedding-only. :)

Oh wow. Ya know...I have not given alot of thought to this either...but. I know, er, I've heard that genital mutilation...that they perform on girls in third countries (maybe here too?) is horrifyingly horrific. So, if we don't, er, shouldn't do it on women...why should we on lil boys? I am so not a good debater...but I guess I would vote for no?

you live in EXTREME LAND! and i think that is a good thing. SF has good intentions for the most part, and leads the way on so many social issues.

i don't have any kids, and i haven't been with a penis in a while (lol), but i will still weigh in on this topic. i would not get a boy circumcised. i know it is a dicey issue, but i say leave those penises alone. not sure that this needs to be LEGISLATED, but i guess the voters will decide. circumcision doesn't NEED to be done. i say no to circumcision, obviously for girls, but for boys, too.

OMG, I can't UNsee that picture! Not having brothers and not being raised in a religion that has an opinion on it, I never gave it thought until I saw my first uncut shame-shame. I'm pro-foreskin. Not because it was super fabulous or anything, just because it made me think of the social issue at hand.

PLEASE DON'T RUN FOR PRESIDENT, YOU CRAZY MAN.

Anyway... I think the props in California are really cool, too. Props for props! ;)

Haha! So crazy, but I get it. Working in foster care, one of my new born baby foster children had it done and I cringed then. Then they showed it on Weeds. It just hurts me to think of it. I like the idea of it being on the ballot though!
