Scare me to death, please

Last Halloween, I went on a quest to find THE SCARIEST MOVIE EVER.  I did a little research & solicited recommendations, and when multiple people suggested The Strangers, I jumped on it, cause Liv Tyler is my very favorite actress, and I've had a longstanding crush on Scott Speedman (since his Felicity days, duh).

But it didn't quite do the trick.  I uttered nary a shriek, and I slept just fine that night.

So here's where you come in: I need your best suggestions at bone-chilling movies that will make me terrified to peer under my bed.  I'm talkin' face-buried-in-the-pillow, panic-inducing movies that will make me feel like it's actually Halloween.

Here are some criteria based on what does & doesn't scare me:

★ No zombies, werewolves, vampires, or aliens (has to be something that could feasibly happen to me)
★ Needs to be somewhat psychological
★ The chances of terrifying me are greater if the movie isn't too old.
★ I remember being scared by Cape Fear (original one? remake? can't remember).  But that kind of thing is what will do it for me, I think.  Silence of the Lambs was pretty spooky, too.  Serial killers are the best bet.

Okay, give me your best suggestions!  Happy (almost) Halloween :)

WHAT?! That movie was SO scary! It's so realistic! It's my fav scary movie. So is Vacany. Have you seen it? It's the same type of story - something that could really happen. It's only like an hour long but keeps you in suspense the whole time!

I was going to suggest Vacancy as well. (I actually haven't seen it but my sister claims it is the scariest thing EVER.)

SERIOUSLY? The Strangers didn't scare you?? My sister and I watched it ONCE and now every time we try to watch it again, we both start squirming in the beginning credits and have to turn it off. Contagion was good, but I don't think it's out on DVD yet. Best of luck finding something!!!

I liked the Strangers alot. I thought it was awesome with the "Because you were home" line. But it was a lil cheesy and drawn out.

I'd pick the original The Grudge called Ju-On. It's is so scary and messed up. It's not the one with Buffy but the real Japanese one. Honestly I'd have to pick alot of Japanese movies to be the most scary not sure why.

Happy Halloween!

"The Strangers" freaked me out a little bit, but didn't quite do it for either! Now the French movie "THEM" on the other hand had me so freaked out that I couldn't sleep the night I watched it. It's kinda the same idea, but it messes with your head a lot more. You can stream it on Netflix!

Have you seen the original texas chainsaw masacre? A group of us got together to watch it once and as soon as it started getting really intense a friend stood up, said "I'm not feeling well" and then face planted into the carpet. A trip to the ER later and I still haven't seen the rest of the movie. Granted he had not eaten that day and it had been a hot summer day, but what I did see was pretty crazy. It's low budget, grainy and scratchy which adds to the intensity.

haahha, i really don't want to be that scared anymore these days! let's watch a romantic comedy together. my place or yours?

Paranormal Activity is possibly the scariest movie I've ever seen. The Ring (either the original, Ringu, or the American remake) and Sixth Sense also scared the crap out of me.

I can name some good horror movies, but I'm not sure they're the "scariest ever."

1408 was also pretty good, if you're into Steven King twists.

Contagion was boring.

the scariest movie i've seen (and even a few years after seeing it, i'm still scared just thinking about it) is the exorcism of emily rose. anything demonic scares the crap out of me.

I thought the strangers was so lame! I don't have a good scary one, its been a while. But the best things to watch are ones that happen in the middle of no where, while you are in the middle of no where. I remember watching Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the one that came out in 2003 or so) and then having to walk through a long empty field with an abandoned farm house in it late at night to get back home.... I think that walk following the movie is what made it so scary!

I am the same way as you. I WANT to find a scary movie that actually scares me. I usually just end up laughing at them because they are just so silly. And no, it doesn't count as scary if it just "startles" you from a cheap sound trick. That pisses me off.

I have zero suggestions because I hate scary movies - and by scary, I mean psychological thrillers. The slasher type films do nothing for me. However, I have to say that I love Matt's comment above for lumping Sex and the City 2 into this category. AMEN!

Raggedy Man circa 1981 scared me --- but I think it's considered a drama.

*shrugs*

I, personally, cannot stand to be frightened. If I wanted to be frightened, I watch Bravo TV.

Anything to do with possession or demonic - The Exorcist (1973) is beyond terrifying, the special effects (such as the famed head-spin) are lame but effective and to top it all, there is popular rumour that production of the movie was cursed! Spooky <3

^^ Oh, and The Exorcist is often marketed as the scariest movie ever made!

I couldn't get through The Strangers. Home invasion scares me senseless. I was watching American Horror Story on FX a couple weeks ago and it was a home invasion and my hubs wasn't home... had to turn it off and finish it the next morning. That's a creepy show if you want one. :) BTW, Scott Speedman is on my top 5 list.

The Strangers scared the hell out of me. More than any movie in years. I don't care for the 'Saw' types.......torture and gore is just gross. The Strangers was horrific b/c it seemed plausible.

Matthew Snope? Sex and the City 2? Best answer ever.

haha! You crack me up! I hate scary movies! Even the cheesy ones give me nightmares!
