On Fads

Lately I've been thinking about fads, and it's probably because of one with which I am particularly disgruntled:

CROP TOPS.  Don't get me wrong: I think they look cute on some people (like for instance 6' tall models).  But definitely not on me.  So when I tried to go shopping with my roommate the other day and all I could find were crop tops from Anthropologie to Forever 21, I was frustrated.  What did designers and stores do with their regular length shirts?  (Oh how I miss the tunic).

Which got me thinking about other fads.  Isn't it mysterious how trends suddenly surface and then spread like wildfire? And then our fickle consumer culture drops 'em like hot cakes and moves on to the next one.  More fads that seem to be omnipresent these days:

What do you think about these trends?  Are there any you particularly love or hate?  It seems like chevron is the new bunting; macaroons are the new cupcakes.  What's next?  You can always get a good idea of what the latest hype is all about by walking into a store like Forever 21, H&M, or Urban Outfitters: they're suckers for the fad du jour.  I'm okay with some of these . . . but crop tops need to BEAT IT.

fad du jour...lol love it!

GREAT post claire. fads are so hit or miss for me but i do admit to falling for some now and then. more so now b/c the fads have been mighty appealing to me.

but then i usually get sick of them, as fads go.

take the glitter accent nail trend...it was cute at first but now i'm over it.

same with ombre.

but navajo and chevron i love.

i'm liking the coloured denim lately [bought indy bright green and red skinnies for the spring/summer!] but can do without the accent nail and the tummy-tops.

as for ombre, i think someone got lazy with their dye job and it caught on somehow.

I like this post. Fads are funny things. I had NO idea that crop tops are a fad right now, and it scares me to go shopping. I will never wear a crop top out of my house. It will make me think of middle school when I thought it was soo cool to have a cm of skin showing between my shirt and jeans or shorts. Ew.

I like the colored denim trend but haven't jumped on it yet...I'm take it or leave it on the glitter nail. I actually really like the ombre hair and would love to have hair long enough to try it. I think there are some that pull it off better than others. I'm not a fan of the navajo trend, and I like chevron but don't really think I'd put it all over the place.

I'm sure you're thrilled that I gave you my run down on all of these, but it's funny because they're all things that I've noticed and formed opinions about in the last few months. Ha!

I'm with ya on crop tops! No thank you! I only own one pair of colored denim (because they were green for St. Pat's!)

hahaha... LOVE this. I am so with you. I can't keep up half the time with whats hot and whats not. I am not in to the crop tops - or really anything that exposes my belly. I don't know about the colored denim... black is the only color I may go to besides my normal denim color. But, I think it looks great on other people.

The one fad I am so glad never came to the US and stuck was the saggy parachute pants. Yuck!! :)

I'm not that fashionable, I like to play it safe.... BUT i have been interested in some colored denim.
I want somewhat of a muted color though, nothing too bright or attention seeking.
I don't know if i'll be able to find it

Crop tops cannot go out of style soon enough. I do love some of the other trends - I love hi-lo shirts (not so high that you see skin) and dresses. I hate macaroons... who said these were good? Gross. Loving the glitter, and chevron is cute for a sweater or accessory, but not digging it for home decor ... I think I would have to remodel again after this year!

Crop tops will be the death of me. Just go away!!!

I'm liking the colored jeans though. I bought a pair off Free People pink jeans at Macy's for a major sale price!! ($19!!)

I like the colored denim. . . but I'm not sure I could pull it off. I like Navajo prints (but I always have!) and I LOVE the ombre hair. But the accent nail, the croptops and the chevron print need to move along.
I WANT ombre hair. . . I've been contemplating it for over a year now but now that it is a big 'fad' I don't think I'll do it. Le sigh.

Trends are always present and like everyone else, I pick and choose what I like. I still love the Navajo look, ombre hair (so much easier on my wallet as I have it right now) and crop tops in SUMMER with a high waisted skirt ie NO belly button showing! The colored denim is definitely everywhere but I don't think I'll try to do that one. I'm not into nails so the accent look is pretty meh.

i did chevron big like 2 years ago (not being snotty!) and seeing it everywhere makes it seem tired to me. sometimes i see it and still like it, but its just too much. such a bummer.

crop tops, uhhh who wears those in real life!?!?!

I've been known to fall for a few here and there but I am generally behind the 8 ball because I'm not a huge shopper.
I would rather be out doing something than in a mall.
As for the colored jeans. Makes me laugh. They were big and hot 10-years ago and now they're back.
The half shirts are redic.
Chevron, I do have one pillow in my house but that's it. I'm more classic and working at a bank, I have to be pretty conservative and untrendy for work.
The one trend that I do like but hubby hates? Rompers!

Crop tops should not be worn by someone my age and I'm not even that old. Just...don't. I like colored denim but B doesn't. He finally admitted the other day it's okay, but "just a fad." I remember colored denim being big in High School too which scares me. It makes me feel old that I'm seeing trends recycle. I still like Chevron and ombre hair only seems to look good if it's curled.

I was just bitching about crop tops. They are everywhere and it's annoying. can I get a normal length shirt? I wear a large...larges shouldn't even be made into crop tops...because the people wearing them are large bahaha!

But for real.

And I had ombre hair for two years. In December I started getting rid of it. The colored pants were big on blogs but never caught on in LA. Weird right? I bought a pqair of green skinnies that I wore once. My red ones were a bigger hit and I've worn them four times lol.

Crop tops should be illegal for muffin tops.

crop tops are like overalls on anyone over the age of 6....NEVER ALLOWED. ever.

i like it when trends because less "trendy", and more a staple and therefore widely available. i hope colored denim is the new skinny jean...cuz i love them both.

I have to admit I love trends. They're fun! I think there are definitely some folks who take the trend thing TOO far, but for the most part I don't take it too seriously and just enjoy them in moderation. I won't spend a ton of money or revamp my entire wardrobe, but I don't mind spending $20 to add a pair of obnoxious jeans into the mix.

Gracie said...

I don't mind trends but I will only get into the ones that will suit me. I wore crop tops when I was 11-13 and I would never do it again.

Sometimes I hate seeing girls wearing them because it doesn't suit everyone.

i'm glad you're feeling better! i noticed that last weekend while looking for some work sweaters, that they were all really short! i would see something cute, pull it off the rack and say: oh. and put it back.

can we get together soon? let me know your sched!

love!

i hear you with the crop top mania. i don't get it and i actually don't think it looks great on the ladies who CAN pull it off.

i am digging the coloured denim and i like the ombre hair on certain girls. on moi it would look terrible!

OMBRE! (i just like saying it out loud while typing it....)

Leesh said...

I still like coloured denim, it's better for me so I won't wear black all the time.

As for crop tops, as we get older, crop tops don't look so nice with a muffin top - haha!

Have a great weekend.

I'm not a fan of the crop tops at all!!! I'm loving the navajo print and colored jeans though!

DEATH TO THE CROP TOP!

and macaroons?!?!? WHO ISN'T OVER THAT SHIT?!?!? i am so tired of pics of macaroons. i would never put one of those in my mouth. BARF. one of the very few sweets that do NOT entice me in the least!

ombre hair. i did it, and i am over it. basically a trend to pay a LOT of money for having hair that LOOKS like it has been growing out for ages. over it.

Aww man, I was TOTALLY going to show up at the airport in a crop top, ombre hair and navajo boots! LOL juuuuust kidding ;) Although the one thing on this list that I absolutely LOVE is the coloured denim! I will be bringing my yellow and green pair with me in May ;) When I was in college I had the cutest dress pants from NY&Co in all the colours of the rainbow :) I have always loved this trend and am glad it's back! ;)
