I inherited a lot from my father.  And while he passed on some good stuff (his commanding laugh, concern for others, ambition, etc.), he also bequeathed to me the following:

*extreme clumsiness (we bang into shit on the regular)
*a bad back
*a screwed up body temp that makes us unreasonably hot all the time
*acid reflux
*and worst of all: INSOMNIA

It's 5:10 am in San Francisco, and I've been up for a good hour and a half.  I pretty much wake up between 4 and 5 am every single night, give or take 30 minutes.  And by "wake up" I mean "wake up and can't go back to sleep," as I wake up and go right back to sleep many times throughout the night.

except in my case, it's 4 am

I've seen doctors, taken Ambien and/or Melatonin, used special bath salts & oils that are supposed to lull you to sleep, tried yoga/stretching at night, stopped drinking coffee in the afternoons, used sleep masks, tried going to bed earlier, and yet still:

And unfortunately, given that my dad hasn't slept through the night in something like 30 years, it's not looking so good for me.  I know I sound whiny, but insomnia really does f up the entire day (especially when it occurs multiple nights in a row).  I think maybe I need to be hypnotized.  Anyone have any less extreme suggestions?  Except don't suggest giving up coffee, cause that would basically ruin my quality of life.

Incidentally, my mom and sister can sleep anytime, anywhere.  Damn genetics.

(And speaking of genetics, check out this hilarious blog post about Mary-Kate and Ashley written by my real life friend & former neighbor, Bonnie.  It's one of the many things I read between 4 and 5 am this morning).

ughh girl i really feel for you! felipe has terrible insomnia and my old roomie also suffered. she ordered a "sleep sheep" from online (i think it's for infants) but she swears it helps her. she also cut out all caffeine. there's also a drink called "neurosleep" i got for felipe, he said it helped..but then again he took sleeping pills the other night and they didn't help at all. bridget (former roomate) can take double the dose on nyquil/tylenol pm and not even feel it (meanwhile im like a zombie for two days afterwards if i take it!)

i never really understood insomnia until i slept with one and while i do have the occasional night's insomnia (we're talking once every 6 months) it's usually bc i took a long ass nap during the day so i'm not really missing any sleep...i don't know how you guys handle it without being total bitches...cause lawwddd knows if i get less than 8 hours im gonna slap a b!!

ill definitely keep you in mind if i hear any new tips from those two though!!

hope youre not too exhausted today!

I have trouble sleeping a lot too. I notice if I stop TV by at least 8 and then ready a nice cozy book it helps some. Except on nights that my anxiety is too high, then there is no running away from it.

Pshh, you have all the right to whine! I'd be a mess if I didn't sleep on the regular.

I've suffered from the same problem but mine was being awake from 3am to 6am. Falling back asleep and the alarm goes off!! ARGH!!
I personally think it has something to do with hormones? Back when I was doing acupuncture I actually talked to her about it too.
Also, do you exercise in the morning or at night?
I've noticed that morning exercise is better for my sleep.
At night - there's something about it that makes me wired at 3am.

Ugh that sucks! I have a hard time falling asleep. Even if I'm tired it can take me a few hours. And I wake up multiple times throughout the night but I can almost always fall back asleep.

I hope you get some relief!

have you thought about trying acupuncture? i haven't noticed a huge difference, but i also don't have major sleeping problems. supposedly it is supposed to help.

That's the worst, Claire! I'm glad you found Ashley and M-K in the midst of your delirium. Thanks for sharing.

Fortunately there's not much insomnia in my lineage, but I do curse the Real family cankles.

INSOMNIA BLOWS!!!!! i hear ya!

i have trouble sleeping many times. and/or i get up 10 times in the night. ARGH! i hate it! monday and tuesday night i did not feel well, and i was so exhausted that i slept well. really well -- like only getting up twice in the night. i am jealous of those that sleep well. i used to, and i don't know what happened.

i know what makes my sleep problems even worse:

sugar, chocolate, ice cream, or alcohol at night
extra spicy food for dinner
exercising too late at night marijuana
heat and humidity

ugh. what a depressing list!

Whenever I can't sleep I start thinking about one of my absolute favourite books as a child - "The BFG" (for Big Friendly Giant) by Roald Dahl. Have you read it? This little girl Sophie can't fall asleep during the "witching hour" and sees a giant who notices her and carries her to his home in Giant Country haha I swear I think of that scene every time I wake up in the middle of the night haha I guess I just really loved that book growing up :) I don't get nearly enough sleep as it is, so I can't imagine just not being able to sleep. My reason for lack of sleep is simply because of Angels games or staying out late with friends. Not because I can't. But I'm like your mom and Kate - I can sleep anytime, anywhere. I take short cat naps even on my hour lunch break! p.s. Thanks for sharing Bonnie's post - I was CRACKING up!

I'm sure you've tried it but have you ever taken those vitamin supplements from GNC? They come in those little packets and there's a night version. They say they help you sleep.

I have suffered from insomnia off and on in my life - usually do to an increase in anxiety. I can't imagine it with any regularity though. Have you ever been to a sleep disorder clinic? I am not sure if they'd have any answer you haven't already tried... but could be worth finding out.
