Catfish

When I was in Vegas back in November, Lindsey told me all about a documentary film called Catfish. She forbid me from googling it and simply insisted I watch. And so, like a dutiful friend, I did.

WOWZA.

This was just before the tv show aired, so I got the back story just in time. Have any of you seen it? If you've seen the tv show, then you know how the documentary turns out (cause it's in the credits). But if you've seen neither, watch Catfish the film immediately.

I'm guessing that many of you already watch the show. I must confess that I'm addicted. Which is kinda silly, since it pretty much turns out the same way every time. And yet still, I find myself experiencing a kind of shock-n-awe at the end of each episode. WHO ARE THESE CRAZIES??? I have some lingering questions, and would love your opinions & insight:

1. Who "dates" someone online for 2+ years without meeting him/her? Have you ever done this? Known anyone who has? Isn't it fishy when your love interest can't even so much as skype?

2. When Nev swoops in and solves the mystery, why do the perpetrators of this weird world show up and reveal themselves? That gets me every time. Somehow, they all magically agree to meet up when Nev calls, and the truth of the situation comes to light. But isn't that strange/unrealistic? One would think that they'd refuse, given that they're about to be humiliated on national tv. I need to get to the bottom of this.

Are you as into Catfish as I am?

i have a theory about #2... that they only air the ones that agree to meet up. and that maybe the person feels guilty and this is the final push they needed to come forward with the truth.

I'm addicted too. every single show.. i have hope that its all the truth.
i should probably watch the documentary now.

I never saw the movie but I remember the previews. I thought it was a low budget horror film lol!

I watch the show now and then and it's pretty entertaining...and sad.

I watched the movie soon after it was released and loved it. I haven't seen the show yet...I need to check it out. When I was in high school, there was this mysterious girl from another town that all the guys in my grade started talking to on MSN messenger and MySpace -- I did some snooping and figured out it was a girl in the grade below us using fake pictures and posing as someone else. It went on for over a year! Too bad the show wasn't around then...maybe I'd have been Nev's cohost.

Catfish is pretty cray! I'm curious if this stuff is even for real. Like who would agree to come clean on national television and make an ass of themself? That just doesn't make sense to me. I still get sucked into watching it everytime its on. LOL

Question: Do you live in San Fran? I'll be there next week for work and curious if you had any suggestions of what to do/eat/see? :)

I haven't seen the show, but I'm guessing that they find the people for the show after doing a call to people who have been lying about their identity to someone online and want to come clean. But they probably present the angle from the naive person's perspective. This way they are sure to get good episodes everytime. I would think that the people lying would also try and hide and try and cover up or backpeddle, but if they are looking for the types of people that want the attention then they have the story.

OMG I'm ADDICTED!!! I am SO in love with Nev and his chest full of hair :) When Christina was here for the holidays, the three of us watched it constantly online. And last night Micaela and I went over to our friend Ashleigh's for dinner and we all watched it (including Felix who loves it too! haha) and had the same commentary during it as you just wrote about haha CRAZIES!!!! Ashleigh was the one who introduced the show to me and while I've never had an online "romance" I was so intrigued since most of our close friendships are started online through blogging and then progress to social media then to texts and then to calls/facetime. I'm happy to say that none of my blogger meetups have ever been a Catfish!! hahaha :)

This is true, we are addicted ha (though unlike Marianne who loves Nev, I love Max)

you are right about the skyping and it sounds horrible of me to say but if you look like most of these people, how could you think you're talking to miss former teen usa/playboy model?

I always wonder about the kind of time and energy it takes to make these profiles and keep up with these lies. I mean in the movie? the way Angela kept up her lies even while they were there. I would have been so embarrassed, going crazy thinking how am I going to come clean and she just kept going!

The only time I got why someone would lie (though it's still cruel) is that girl who said she was bullied before so that's how it started. And then she said that this other person was always there.

But still. ha

I saw the documentary after he show aired...I thought I was watching a really long episode and then the last 30 minutes I realized it was Nev's story!! haha Those are my exact same questions when I watch!! First the no-skype/meeting up is like pre-social media when all we had was AOL dial up and people would "meet" and start relationships on chat rooms. @nd I think maybe they use only the people who have said yes already? Or maybe the fake person is just tired of being fake and wants to come clean??

i never saw the movie, but i am totally baffled by the show!! i mean what the heck is wrong with these people 'dating' someone online for YEARS and never meeting them or video chatting with them? CRAZY.

I'm obsessed with that tv show! It's a train-wreck but I love it!!! I mean seriously, how do you "love" someone and date them online without ever seeing them?? It's crazy but makes for great entertainment! :)

I have no idea what Catfish is all about but I always read about it from Marianne. I think she's addicted. I have to find out what this show's all about, I'm not even sure if it's playing or was playing here in Canada.

i had not idea this was made into a tv show!!
i think people don't find out for sure who these people are (via meeting or skype, etc) because they really don't want to know the truth.

I only watched Catfish a few times here and there. If I had more time, I'd be glued to the tv watching this. And why is Nev so gorgeous!

also addicted ... i think i started watching after something i read on your blog and/or twitter!!

i just want for ONCE for it to be the real person. i mean, how dumb (and, let's be honest, sad) are these people who have been "dating" someone for so long and they don't think it's weird that there's no skype?? like, i feel like this show would have been much more compelling back maybe 5 years ago when it could actually be legit that there was no way to skype. now, if i was talking to someone, i'd be like, yo, i'll MAIL you a webcam bc they're like $5.

what was your favorite one? the first one i watched was with Sunny - and her 'boyfriend' turned out to be a girl....HOW did she not think the voice was a little sketchy?!! she was SO CERTAIN!

the one with a guy who ends up meeting his girl and she's overweight, with dark hair .. i can't remember their names...i wish that one would've worked out!

I've never seen the movie, but have had the tv suck me in a few times. I have to image they are paying the person to agree to meet-up. Or otherwise they just really want to be on tv.

And while I'm ashamed to admit it, back in high school I did have an internet relationship. Although it was more of a guy a friend met online that I started talking to online too. I'm pretty sure we talked on the phone, but never met in person. So who knows if he actually was the person he said he was.

Catfish sadly illustrates how stupid some people are.

I saw the movie when it came out and did the exact same thing, didn't research it at all. In fact, I thought it was going to be a horror movie. Which is kinda was, in a weird way. I'm totally hooked on this show too. I can't help but think it's staged somehow, but I'm still watching and loving it. I have a crush on Nev and Max! :)

This topic has seriously piqued my interest lately with the manti teo incident. I can't believe people hang on like that! I need to watch the show
