Alternative Gift Guide

Hunting for the perfect gift is simultaneously one of the most fun and stressful pre-Christmas activities. There's nothing like buying a gift you just know the recipient is gonna love, but then there's that dreadful scrambling-for-a-gift that inevitably results in spending a billion last-minute dollars on something of questionable value.

This year my family made really specific lists, so there hasn't been a lot of mystery involved. Matt was sort of puzzled by this . . . he said in his family, they don't make lists; rather, they seek out unique gifts they hope (but don't know) that each other will like. Somehow, that way sort of retains the magic, I think. I've already proposed to my family that we abandon lists next year.

I'm pretty much done shopping, but here are some things I think would make excellent, slightly-outside-the-mainstream gifts:

What a hilarious way to drink your coffee, right? Perfect gift/stocking stuffer for your coffee drinking brother/sister/spouse/mom/dad with a sense of humor and an appreciation for decorative motherfuckin' gourd season.
Where to buy: McSweeney's
Price: $12

Okay so the truth is that I really really really want this shirt.
Where to buy:
Price: $19.50

This ring is pretty f'ing sweet, and they have it in NYC, London, and Seattle as well (though I had to feature San Francisco, duh!)
Where to buy:
Price: $70

Okay so this is Voice of Witness' newest title and I work for Voice of Witness . . . but damn if it isn't an incredible book. It's our first book that's primarily photography-based, and it documents the photos and stories of refugees as they first arrive in the United States.
Where to buy: McSweeney's
Price: $25

If there's anyone in your life who loves Sons of Anarchy and has a new baby, he or she needs this (it comes in pink, too).
Where to buy: FX Shop
Price: $9.95

Have you bought any gifts that are funny, clever, edgy, or that you're particularly proud of this year? Tell me about them! And happy blinged out tree season, motherfuckers.

Free People Wish List

It's crazy how much time I spend browsing the Free People website.  It's like walking through an art gallery--gazing at all the beautiful things, imagining how they'd look in my home (closet).  Here are my most recent obsessions:

Seriously tried to convince my friend Jessie to get married in this.

Love these.  So much.

Not a color I usually go for, but what a beautiful dress . . .

I love patterned scarves, and it's scarf weather in San Francisco pretty much year round.

I can already think of so many letter combinations I want . . . starting with NO.  heehee.

Can you believe that anyone works at this store?  I'd go flat broke.  No way would I be able to save a penny from a paycheck if I were surrounded by this stuff all day.  Free People employees: How do you maintain your willpower???

5 Things

5 things I'm loving right now:

1. Morning coffee.  My favorite time of day.  Drinking strong coffee & reading blogs in the late morning is blissful.

2. This bracelet I got at H&M this week.  Cheers me up instantly:

this pic reminds me that I should post about my epic scar

3.  My country music Pandora station.  Reminds me of home?  ha

4. Watching past seasons of Sons of Anarchy with Matt.  CANNOT WAIT for the season 5 premiere in just two weeks.  I mean look:

5. And speaking of awesome things that are happening in September, I'm loving the anticipation of football season!  Micaela and Marianne got me the most amazing Saints jersey & panties from Victoria's Secret for my birthday, so I'm all set for the season opener:

What are you loving these days?

Things I've Been Making Lately

I get a CSA box every three weeks, and it's pretty much the highlight of my month.  The best part about getting produce straight from a farm is that I end up trying new recipes, since I get things in my box that I normally wouldn't buy at the store.  Case in point: the eggplant that came last week.  Now, I looooooove a good eggplant parm, and the eggplant penne at Lococo's is to die for.  But I've never been masterful at cooking the ol' aubergine, so I basically never buy them at the grocery store.

After scouring the internet for healthyish eggplant recipes, I settled on this one.  But, as usual, I made a few modifications in order to achieve this deliciousness:

*I didn't peel my eggplant
*I used panko bread crumbs instead of wheat germ
*I added a healthy shake (or three) of nutritional yeast to the breading mix
*I made about 1/3 extra of the breading mix so that my eggplant slices were pretty heavily breaded
*I sprayed the baking tray with nonstick cooking spray

and for the sauce, I:
*sauteed 1/2 an onion, a smallish sweet pepper (also from my CSA box), and minced garlic
*when it was sufficiently translucent/cooked/browning, I added a jar of Giada's Roasted Garlic marinara as recommended by Lindsey
*threw in several shakes of chili flakes and Italian seasoning

When it was all done, I stacked eggplant/marinara/eggplant/marinara/eggplant/marinara with a pinch of part-skim mozzarella on top, and heavens to Betsy it was good.  Seriously, one of my new faves.  I had to stop myself from devouring the entire tray.

Best part?  It was super easy & quick.  40 minutes tops, start to finish, and well worth the time.  Make it! and report back to me your delight.

I've also been making some jewelry lately; something I really haven't done since college.  I went through a frenzied period when I was living in New Orleans during which I spent hundreds of dollars on beads, materials, etc. and countless hours fashioning necklaces, bracelets, and earrings.  But since I pretty much burned myself out, I haven't played around with jewelry in many years.  I don't know what came over me (well, yes I do, I wanted to make thank you gifts for the Domino Five, although I still haven't sent them . . . ), but recently I've been whipping out some DIY accessories:

Fun!  I need to work on the durability of my creations, though.  Any jewelers out there wanna give me some tips on how to make sure the jump rings don't split?

And lastly, I "made" this poem several years ago, but it just came out this summer in Booth.  Well, I guess it came out two months ago, but I just noticed it today.  So it's "new."  Ha.

Happy Wednesday!

Friday Favorites

A moment to sit down and write, at last!  This week has been nonstop, but that makes me appreciate the still moments even more.  I am so happy to see Friday!

Here are some of my current faves:

I ordered this bracelet on sale at Free People and although it hasn't arrived on my doorstep yet, I'm already in love with it!  I'm smitten with mixed metals (and pretty much everything Free People makes).  As a bonus, it was really inexpensive!  I haven't bought anything for myself in a while, but I decided that after this past week, I deserved a little present.

Dear God, please let Emily choose Arie, cause Jef and his bouffant are a little ridic.  Plus, Arie's way hotter.  And I'm not just saying that because I happen to have unearthed his mug shot (pictured above). Evidently, homeboy's been arrested twice for driving without a license and no valid registration.  Which doesn't exactly make him a bad ass . . . but at least he has a mugshot.  I'm certain that qualifies as the "edginess" Emily's looking for.  Ha!  *p.s. if you've read spoilers, please don't tell me!  I read them last season and seriously regretted it.

FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS HOLY, go out and buy these immediately!  Matt brought them home for me the other day (after I had passed them up at TJ's but yammered on and on about how much I wanted them) and I was both ecstatic and frustrated at the same time.  I'm counting calories, yo! But I "budgeted" one of these bad boys into my calorie allotment the other day and now I can't stop thinking about the three left in the box.  They are every bit as good as they sound/look.  I'm basically willing to starve myself so that I can eat these.  ;)

So that's it for the week.  What are your current faves?  Link up with my girl Lindsey and let me know!

Girl Survey

I'm a big fan of great suggestions.  I've gotten all kinds of awesome recommendations from the blogs I read, so the other day when I was scrubbing my bath tub and could not for the life of me get it bleachy-white, I thought: I know just who to ask!

Please chime in and give me all your wisdom on the following topics--I wanna hear from you!!

1. Is there such thing as an eyeliner that doesn't smudge at all?

2. What's the best shower/tub cleaner?

3. Do you know of a way from keeping cheap gold jewelry to stop from turning silver?

4. How do you deal with bikini razor bumps?  It's almost summer & I'm dying over here.

5. What's the most effective nail polish top coat?

I'm sure that as soon as I hit "post," I'll think of a bunch more things I wanted to ask.  But let's start here--give me your suggestions!

Let's Talk about Bling

Lane and I have been friends since we were wee young 7th graders.  Our mamas went to high school together, so we'd known each other longer, but we became attached at the hip on the school bus in middle school.

We've been through many adventures together: college, travel, deaths, relationships, weddings, heartbreaks, grad schools, illnesses, etc.

I could fill books with pictures of the two of us.  Those above are a mere fraction.

Here's where I need your help.  Lane and I both turned 30 this summer, and we decided that we'd mark the occasion (and 18 years of friendship!) with matching necklaces.  The problem is, we can't decide on one!  So I need you to hook me up with your favorite jewelry designers/sellers.  Here are some criteria:

*We're looking to spend around $100
*Needs to be something that will last a long time/not turn green/not break/etc.
*I like gold better, but will go for silver if it's the affordable option
*No cheesy hearts or stars ;)

I like these, for instance:

(but Lane already has a wishbone necklace)

an option, maybe?

So help me!!!  If you have any ideas for jewelers, websites, etc., hook me up!  Lane and I have been going back and forth for a couple months now and can't seem to find the one.

Brainstorm: GO!

Wine & Love!

I'm not one for excessive linkups but this one was too hard to pass up.  I spotted it today on my friend Meredith's blog, Thank You Ma'am (do you read her blog?  If not, you should hop on over there and follow her.  We were paired as swap partners and now her blog is one of my favorites.  She's finishing law school and getting married all in the next four months, and she's a southern girl, too!).  So link up with Nora if you want to play along and tell us what has you reachin' for the wine bottle & what you're loving!

from / I really want a set of the glasses on the right--pretty!

What's Got Me Reachin' for the Bottle:
*The punk kid who said "that's hella gay" in my 2nd period class and then when I reprimanded him, replied "you're hella f---ed up."  Level 3 referral before I'm done with coffee = no good.

*Final exams for seniors next week.  I haven't written my finals.  That's all.

*Needing a job and a roommate by July 1st.  Just a lil too much pressure for this girl.  Ohhhhh Saturn Returns, you're killin' me.

*My apartment looks like it has been ransacked by burglars (incidentally, "burglar" is one of the funniest words in the English language).

*Jillian Michaels and Level 2 of the 30 Day Shred.  And every time she says "Don't phone it in."

*My mama's turning 50 in a couple weeks and she lives all the way across the country.  Would that I had the time (off) and money to go home to Georgia and celebrate with her!

What I'm Loving:
*Balboa's graduation is May 26th.  The freedom of summer is a'callin.

*Summer, my cousin Jennifer, Micaela, Marianne, and Jessie are all coming to visit in the next month and a half!

*I recently got a necklace in the mail from a Love & Victory giveaway that I won on Cup of Jo!  Can you believe I won a Cup of Jo giveaway??  It's basically impossible!  This is the necklace:

(it's the LOVE one.  Thank you Love & Victory and Joanna!)

*Speaking of giveaways, I am loving Bianca of justbedesigns and the giveaway she is sponsoring on my blog!  If you haven't entered yet, please do so here.  The choices are incredible!

*The show Parenthood.  I'm totally hooked.  Have any of you seen it?

Let me know if you link up so I can check out your post.  In any case, I hope your "loving" list is longer than your "reaching for the wine bottle" list!  Happy almost-Friday. :)

Friday I'm in Love!

Yay!  It's Friday and I am in love with a lot more things than I was in love with last Friday.  My jerkface students & I hugged it out and made up today, and we're all staring a 3 day weekend in the face!  I don't even mind that I'm not going away to a warm beach this weekend, cause I'm so dang excited to catch up with some things around the house and otherwise be blissfully lazy.  Here's my 9/3/10 love list:

Birthday Earrings!
I am decidedly in love with all six pairs of earrings I got for my bday, but here's a spotlight on two pairs in particular (both of which I've worn this week):

The dangly beauties on the left feature photographs of Anais Nin, one of my very favorite writers/women/historical figures.  I LOVE HER.  They are from my best friend, Tiffany, who lives in Pittsburgh and whom I miss terribly (we've been bffs since 9th grade).  The adorable little studdies on the right are incredibly thoughtful fleur de lis pretties from the sweet-as-pie Summer!  They are especially meaningful since Summer & I share a deep love for New Orleans (she's from NOLA, I went to college there).  Thank you sweet girls!

Only Gold for Me
Not only is that my personal mantra, but it's the name of my new favorite nail polish.  I laid eyes on it this week in Sephora, tested it on my thumb, and knew right away that I had to have it.  Sadly, they were all out!!!  I couldn't bring myself to buy the tester, as it only had about 25% left in it.  You better believe I'll be waiting in line as soon as they get a new shipment; check out how gorgeous:

Pretty Hair
I'm about as attached to my hair stylist, Lauren, as I am to anything in this mortal world.  Which is why I'm thrilled to have an appointment with her here

this coming Wednesday afternoon for a cut & Brazilian blowout!  Can't wait for my locks to be shiny & silky right outta the shower.  I'll report back with the results, of course.

Labor Day
I mean . . . as someone who has two jobs, values unions, and appreciates the common working man, I am fond of the spirit behind Labor Day, as detailed in Wikipedia:

The form for the celebration of Labor Day was outlined in the first proposal of the holiday: A street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations," followed by a festival for the workers and their families.

But I have to be honest and admit that I actually care a lot more about the fact that we get a long weekend than I am about the sentiment.  Bring on the Monday BBQ at our house!

Happy long weekend!
