Playing Catch Up in a Major Way!

Whoa, it's been a week since I blogged!  I got re-sick this week (ugh) so I barely had energy for work, much less blogging.  In any case, I'm on the rise and I'm happy to be catching up on your blogs, at long last!

Given that I've spent more time at home than usual this week, I've done tons of cooking and nail painting and reading and homey stuff like that.  So here are some things from the past week that you should know about:

I painted my nails several times, and here are some of the results:

The nails are Deutsch You Want Me Baby? from the OPI Germany collection;
toes are Essie Sew Psyched (and they match my bath mat!)

I really, really love the Germany collection, and that bright, burnt orangey color is perfect for welcoming Fall.  Needless to say, nail polish peels (way faster than toes), so when the inevitable happened, I did this:

My darling Lindsay sent me these two Essie colors for my birthday (along with some amazing nail stamps that I'll blog about soon), and I couldn't resist pairing them for these two-toned nails.  Pretty, right?

Ah, the perks of being homebound.  Your nails look awesome as you lie in bed hacking and sneezing.

Speaking of lying in bed, I finished Gone Girl (um, WHOA.  If you're looking for a can't-put-it-down book, get this one immediately!) and have moved onto this one, recommended by my friend Diana who has impeccable taste in literature:

It's a pretty fascinating premise.  There are six autonomous stories within Cloud Atlas; the first half of each is told in the first half of the book.  At the halfway point, the second half of the stories commence, rendering story 6 as the only one told as one whole, unbroken story.  Does that make sense?  In any case, there is reasonable suspicion that the characters in each story are reincarnations of each other (the stories span centuries) . . . if you've read it, let me know so we can talk about it!

Also, I made these tonight, and they're so good that I seriously can't stop obsessing over them:

LET ME TELL YOU.  They are the best things I've eaten in recent memory and without a doubt, worth every calorie.  I followed this recipe but made the following modifications:

1. I used Morningstar soy crumbles instead of beef/turkey, but I am certain it would be equally delicious with any of those options

2. I sauteed chopped onions (1/2 a large onion) before adding the soy meat, and used this combination (plus the cream cheese) to stuff into the shells

3. I used extra taco seasoning and extra cream cheese (I have finally learned what my sister has been proclaiming for ages: EVERYTHING is better with cream cheese)

4. I added a lil chili pepper to the browning "meat"/onion mixture to give it a little heat

5. I didn't measure the cheese, but sprinkled mozzarella on top of the shells before I baked them (under the foil), and then when I took off the foil after 25 minutes, I sprinkled sharp cheddar on top and let it broil

6. I used salsa instead of taco sauce

Okay, so if you've never followed a recipe I've posted here, NOW IS THE TIME.  I'm telling you--these are a game changer.  I cannot wait to make them again (this weekend when my beautiful cousins are here!!!).

In other news, I may need therapy after this football season.  My beloved team is now 0-4, and after a brutal loss to the Packers today.  Did anyone else watch the game?  Losing by one point is a special kind of devastating.  Especially when you've made a field goal--for the win, mind you--and it's retracted thanks to a penalty.

But a fairweather fan I AM NOT, so I'm currently coveting these babies for football Sundays:

You bet your behind I'd wear those--and proudly!!!

Happy Monday, everyone.  Glad to be back!

Friday Faves

Friday is becoming my favorite blogging day because I love sharing my current favorite things and reading all about everyone else's.  Lindsey is brilliant for this linkup: I've seriously found so much good stuff via these posts!  So now onto the good stuff:

When my previous black & gold sandals were on their last leg, I bought these Dolce Vita beauts at a DSW in Georgia.  I love them!  They're cute, my favorite color combo, have a protective metal strip at the toe so they don't easily scuff, and best of all?  They are so incredibly comfy.  I've basically been wearing them every day for the past few weeks.

What you see above is currently the 500 point gift at Sephora.  If, like me, you've been saving your points for something awesome, now is the time to cash in!  This set is amazing: the tinted primer works wonders, the eyeshadow is light, shimmery, and a perfect fall color, the lip gloss already has me addicted, and you get an eye pencil (goldy-blackish) and a mascara, too!  They're all half-sizes, but I suspect I'll be hunting down the full products once I go through these.  This gift box confirms my love for Laura Mercier.

Excuse the messy coffee table and note that this is my latest wine fave.  It's only $8.99 and it's so delicious.  I generally like red blends, and this one is the perfect combination of peppery and smooth.  I've bought three bottles in the past few weeks!  If you have a Trader Joe's near you, try it out!

And lastly, I leave you with my favorite Judebug clip ever, in which he says "lessssss goooo.  less do it" while urging me to "make a funny video of him."  HAHAHA!

Happy long weekend!

Friday Favorites

I can't believe it's Friday again.  This week has been a little bit ruthless, with various hailstorms of stress including but not limited to: our roommate moving out (& therefore searching for a new one . . . or a new apartment), this emotionally draining writing workshop I've been teaching (plus a myriad of other work), a stress-induced temper fit on my part, and yet another court date with a certain vengeful ex of my boyfriend's.  Not to mention, I'm in the midst of a no-health-insurance period (it won't kick in until the fall with my new job), which makes me nervous.  Ay, life.  Thank God for the good things (and people), right?

In order to keep afloat this week, I've tried to focus on some of these awesome things, in no particular order:

My friend Lesley posted the recipe the other day on her blog, and I made it immediately with just a few alterations:

*I used veggie instead of chicken stock (and a little more than she suggested)
*I doubled the amount of minced garlic
*I used vegan Earth Balance instead of butter (cause that's what I had in my fridge)

And they were so good that I made them again the very next day.  This means a lot coming from me, cause cauliflower is like my least favorite vegetable.  But these seriously taste like mashed potatoes!

Have I mentioned how much I love this show?  I got into it sometime last summer, and I think I've seen every episode.  Basically, the trainer, Chris Powell, takes on one "super-obese" client and spends an entire year on his/her transformation (diet and exercise).  The results are astounding--these people lose over half their body weight!  I couldn't find any before & after pics that do it justice, so you'll just have to watch for yourselves. :)

*p.s. as an added bonus, this show always puts me in the mood to run/workout

I'm lusting over these Zara wedges right now and, dangerously, they're on sale.  I haven't decided yet if I'm going to let myself indulge . . . but they sure are stuck on the brain.  Aren't they cute?  And it doesn't even matter that summer's more than halfway over, cause these shoes are wearable in San Francisco almost all year round. ;)

I'm off to try to set my DVR to record the Olympics, but tell me: what are you loving this week?

It's Officially Summertime!

With the high temps in the Bay Area lately, I don't need the solstice to tell me summer has arrived . . . but it sure does feel official now!  I can't wait to see what time the sun goes down tonight.  It's been staying light till almost 9 pm!

Some summery things that are on my mind:

my new favorite cover-up;

These Target wedges that are sold out in my size/on backorder :(

This! So yummy.

The only problem with summer is that all I really want to do is lay by the pool, have beers/cocktails on porches with friends, and take day trips to fun places.

What's on your mind for summer?

One thing on the brain . . .

This morning, I paid a little visit to my (hot) podiatrist, Dr. Jake Lee, and he gave me the best news I've heard in a while.  He said my x-rays looked great, that he couldn't even see the fracture anymore, and that I could ditch the robo-boot I've been sporting!  He also said that I could start walking and, if that's comfortable, begin running again.  YAY TUESDAY!  This day is off to an incredible start.

Therefore, I only have one thing on my mind: SHOES.  Now that I'm no longer bound to the hideous and uncomfortable walking cast-boot, I'm rifling through my closet trying to find my highest-heeled pretties.  And also scouring the internet for outlandish platforms such as these:

Those last ones aren't exactly summery, but they're still HOT!

Some News

So, I got a new job!

I've been teaching social justice to students with incarcerated family members at Balboa High School for the past six years.  I really have loved it--it's been invigorating, purposeful, inspiring, and has taught me so much.  But, I've been doing it for six years.  And people like me get restless.

When Voice of Witness contacted me about a new position in their Education department, it seemed like serendipity.  (You may remember that I worked on their latest book about women who suffered abuses while incarcerated?)

(this book)

Voice of Witness is a nonprofit book series that uses oral history to depict human rights crises through the people who've suffered them.  The people I'm working with are amazing--almost as amazing as Voice of Witness itself. :)  My new job, basically, is to work with the Education Director on creating new curriculum around the books that come out, supporting teachers around using our books & curriculum in their classrooms, and teaching folks the importance of/how to do oral history.  I am so excited!  Check out all the books here.

Change is a little scary.  It's emotional leaving a beloved job, even if it's the right time.  And right now, I'm in the thick of end-of-the-year madness at school, learning the ropes at Voice of Witness (I started part-time last week), babysitting 1-2 evenings a week, and teaching at the prison on Monday nights.  All on a broken foot!  Suffice to say, I'm busier than ever.

But I'm also really grateful for this new opportunity.  Sometimes the universe gives you what you need at just the right time.

On another note, I'm obsessed with these shoes, but can't justify buying them since I can't wear anything remotely close to this until the godforsaken boot comes off:

Happy Friday!

All I can think about is Free People

and for once I'm not talking about prisoners. ;)

It's precisely when my bank account is at its most dismal that I begin fantasizing about all the clothes and shoes I desire.  Which is what led me to the Free People site a few days ago, where I proceeded to gaze, gawk, and gasp over all the beautiful things.  Check it:

(why hello, New Years Eve dress of my dreams)

(I'd even wear coral for this top)

It's like a boho-Gypsy-semi-homeless-shimmery dreamworld.  Which is why, when I was at Marshalls yesterday, and I stumbled upon a single Free People dress on clearance (and in a medium), I had to buy it:

It's loose & drapey and oh so pretty with a cardigan & booties

And now I must direct you to the Free People homepage, where you'll need to wait patiently for about two seconds until the pug walks onscreen.  Proceed to watch the pug throughout the day, as my sister and I did upon discovery.

Happy Things

Sometimes--for instance when you're in the midst of assigning quarter grades, managing a brand new class 7 weeks into the school year, reeling from a recent execution and a possibly dying pet, and your car's in the shop--you need to focus only on beautiful & happy things. :)

Like these shoes I'm crushing on pretty hard:

And the fact that I keep seeing on twitter that it's National Coffee Day (honestly, what better thing to celebrate?).  Even better is that thanks to my new schedule at work, I took the morning to finish grades at home and got to slowly sip my coffee at my dining room table.  Being able to drink my coffee slowly (out of a mug and at my apartment) is one of my favorite luxuries.

Thursday means I get to hang out with these folks tonight:

My friend Matt and I fondly call Deena "pony."  Doesn't she kinda look like one?  Also, Matt does a killer DJ Pauly D impression.  (And can we talk about the fact that Pauly has a DJ PAULY D sign hanging on his twin-sized bedframe?).

Anecdote:  Once, when I was in college & working in the English Department, I walked out of the building to head across the quad to the Architecture School (which had a coffee bar on the first floor).  A man was walking across the quad with a pony on a leash (yes).  I stopped and kinda laughed and said, "Oh my god--you are walking a pony!"  And he said, "Oh, no--it's not a pony.  It's a miniature horse."

Lastly, my roommate Jen and I stayed up late last night drinking wine and laughing hard and talking about the men in our lives.  That, right there, is the stuff of life. ;)

Happy almost-weekend.  Mine's gonna be full of cute babies, cute football players, cute boys, and one extremely cute kitten:

Today I am sporting my red Miu Miu slingbacks*:

and this little headband in my hair:

toting these for my lil' monster-students:

and with copies of this poem to share with them:

First Poem for You**
            Kim Addonizio

I like to touch your tattoos in complete
darkness, where I can't see them.  I'm sure of
where they are, know by heart the neat
lines of lightning pulsing just above
your nipple, can find, as if by instinct, the blue
swirls of water on your shoulder where a serpent
twists, facing a dragon.  When I pull you
to me, taking you until we're spent
and quiet on the sheets, I love to kiss
the pictures in your skin.  They'll last until
you're seared to ashes; whatever persists
or turns to pain between us, they will still
be there.  Such permanence is terrifying.
So I touch them in the dark; but touch them, trying.

Seriously: what's not to love about Valentine's Day?  However, my Valentine's Day promises to be quite untraditional, as instead of savoring a romantic dinner tonight, I will be teaching love poems at San Quentin State Prison.  What a hilarious place to spend the day of love!  It will certainly remind me that there are far worse positions to be in than dateless. ;)

What are y'all up to today??

*Let it be known that I will not be wearing said Miu Miu slingbacks to the prison tonight.
**Did you notice it's a perfect Shakespearean sonnet?

Friday I'm in Love!

It's Friday, and I'm exhausted.  But I'm wearily in love with these things:

1. All the Valentine's love  that's been pouring in my mailbox!  If you're struggling with making your own Valentines, check out Micaela's gorgeous, hand-crafted cards.  Hers put mine to shame!  And check out this loot--Faiza sent decorations for my all-girls V-Day sleepover, and my friend Linda sent hilarious chocolate.  So excited:

this is just the beginning!

2.  This blog's  layout and design.  I love it!  I came across it through Carrie's white denim in winter challenge, and I immediately emailed the sweet blogger, Kai, to ask who did her design.  Now, to spend $60 on a new blog layout or not to?  Isn't her blog perfect looking?  I'm smitten.

3. These Jeffreys:

Normally I like super-feminine shoes, but something about these clunky, modern platforms has me all atwitter.

Hope everyone's having a delightful Friday!  It sure is easier to get through the day knowing there is a weekend ahead of you.  Unfortunately, I will be hunkered down all weekend staring at my computer screen since I have an upcoming deadline for the Voice of Witness project I'm working on (transcribing the interviews I've done and turning them into first person narratives).  I love the project so dearly, and I'm so fortunate to be a part of it . . . but man, is it time-consuming!

Friday I'm in Love!

I've got a new shoe crush and it's taken hold of me.  Evidently, Rihanna and I have the same taste in Louboutins.  The one pair I own, she owned first (damn her!).  And now, she's bested me again, cause she has the Christian Louboutin Misfit 150s!  Thus begins my Friday I'm in Love post with

1. These Loubs:

other things I love about this photo: Vogue, Rihanna, Annie Leibovitz

Believe it or not, I think I like them best in the creamy khaki color.  They're perfectly dramatic in black, but maybe a little too goth for me.  But the lighter color?  HOLY MOTHER.  I've fallen hard.  They're only $1500, so I only need to take 862 more babysitting jobs to get my paws on them!

2. Snooki's book being on the New York Times best seller list.

Don't believe me?  Click here.

Did I just order this book from amazon?  Why yes, yes I did.  What can I say, I love to read. ;)

(What I'm not in love with: that I have $80K of student loans and an MFA in Creative Writing and yet Snooki's book is on the best seller list).

That moments after Snooki was hauled off by the cops and taken to the slammer, JWOWW was sporting one of these:

In case you've forgotten some of Snooki's finer moments, here's a little reminder:

4. Jude + Tim Riggins

Jude is nobody's fool, and damn straight he's paying homage to the fact that Tim Riggins has been released from jail and is back in Dillon, Texas!  Let's just say my Wednesday nights have gotten a little brighter (uh--hotter) now that Timmy's back on Friday Night Lights.

welcome home, baby.
tell me, what kinds of things did you miss while you were in prison?

Hope the rest of you have had a lovely week and have fun weekend plans.  I finally have a day off on Sunday (!!!) so let's just say the world is my oyster.  Happy weekend!

Friday I'm in love with Central America

It is Friday and I am very much in love with three things:

1. These shoes

I first saw them on this blog and my heart skipped a beat . . . I looked them up immediately, and am now mustering all the justifications I can for spending $178 on a pair of shoes right before Christmas (when I should be saving my money for gifts!).  I cannot get these shoes outta my head!  Just imagine them with black tights and a gray ballerina-esque skirt!  They are perfect.  They are exquisite.  I have to find a way . . .

2. My students' reactions to the West Memphis Three case
In class we read Damien Echols's memoir, Almost Home, and then watched the HBO documentary, Paradise Lost, about the West Memphis Three case.  My students are so into it, and it makes me happy, because trust me . . . this case is worth getting to know.  It's crazy to think that blatant injustice is still happening in our "civilized" country.

3. Leaving for Guatemala tonight!
Freeman, his parents, and I are hittin' the road tonight and catching a flight to LA at 9:30, immediately followed by a flight to Guatemala City!  We'll head to Antigua bright & early tomorrow morning, and will stay there for the next few days.  We're all gonna be exhausted (hello, international red-eye with a toddler!), but it will be well worth it.  I've been battling wanderlust for quite some time now, and I think this trip might just take care of it.  For a while, anyway. :)  Check out these pics of Antigua, known for its volcanoes!

I'll be back Wednesday morning, so in the meantime, have a fantastic weekend!

Have any of you been to Antigua, or Guatemala in general?
